THE GREATEST UNIVERSITY OF ALL IS THE COLLECTION OF BOOKS
I am a collector. I have many collections that inspire the art that I
make. Napoleon is a big presence in my home and indeed anything Napoleonic. I collect Russian painted boxes. I collect pins.
I collect vintage jewelry. I collect Frida Kahlo clay dolls by Josefina Aguilar. I have a huge library focused on art, Catherine
the Great, Marie Antoinette, quotations and many great artists. The fabric and paper I have
collected occupies plenty of space in my studio. I have a huge collection of rubber stamps. Collecting is in my nature. These
collections play a role both consciously and subconsciously in any piece of art I create.
THE ARTIST IS NOT A DIFFERENT KIND OF PERSON,
BUT EVERY PERSON IS A DIFFERENT KIND OF ARTIST
One of the artists
I admire the most is Patrica Nix. Her art was the first to stop me in my tracks
and move me to tears. She creates what I see in my head. I would like
to occupy a small space in her studio for six months so I could see her at work.
The second artist
who has made the world a better place is Norval Morrisseau. He is Canada's greatest painter. He has filled my home with Shamans. Sadly, He passed away in 2007.
December 05, 2007 Copper Thunderbird has taken flight. Norval Morrisseau's death yesterday at
Toronto General Hospital, at age 75 after a long and feisty battle with Parkinson's disease, won't end of the gritty story
of the great Anishinabe painter once called "the Picasso of the north" who signed his canvases "Miskwaabik Animiki" or Copper
Thunderbird.
The artists I would
have loved to have known encompass many art movements. I love the Group
of Seven, Pollack, David, Van Gogh, Kahlo, Monet, Warhol, Rivera, Klimpt and Modigliani. I
love to travel to museums and galleries at home and overseas to see their work in person.
My goal is to work large scale in the next decade. I have a vision of
a canvas series that would incorporate many of my favorite images...but I still have much to learn.
